Animal Attacks Should Be Taken Seriously

An attack by an animal can be scarring in many ways. Permanent injuries causing disabilities are very possible. Small children might be emotionally scarred for life.

The owners of a dangerous animal are responsible for the damage they have caused. If you or someone you love has been attacked by an animal, it's important to take action. That includes attacks on your pets, as this is a sign of a dangerous animal that needs to be registered.

Dogs are Most Dangerous

The most common animal attacks come from dogs. It is commonly believed that certain breeds are responsible for most attacks, but that is far from true. It is always the owner's fault, no matter the situation, and it is up to them to keep their dog under control.

In Travis County, a dangerous dog registry is kept by the city of Austin for dogs which are deemed dangerous. In order to be placed on that registry, a dog must have previously bitten a human or killed another pet.

Once a dog is declared dangerous, the owner must restrain their dog at all times and carry up to $100,000 of liability insurance. Any dog which is on this registry is considered a dangerous animal under Texas law.

What Can You Do?

An owner with a dangerous dog can be charged with a felony under two circumstances, as defined by section 6.03 of the Texas penal code:

If they show criminal negligence in their failure to secure their dog, or

If the dog is known to be dangerous and attacks someone, injuring them.

Dog attacks are a very serious matter under Texas law, and are treated as such. Anyone attacked by a dog has the law on their side in establishing fault with the owner.

Recovering Compensation

It is also the owner's responsibility to provide full recovery for any victims of their dog's attack. If you or a loved one have been attacked by a dog or any animal, it is important that you speak with an experienced personal injury attorney about the situation.

It is the responsibility of every animal owner to secure their pet. If someone has not done so and you have become injured, you are entitled to compensation.
